Why PE Requirement Matters:
The physical education requirement ensures that students understand the benefits of staying active, develop lifelong fitness habits, and gain exposure to activities that support mental and physical health.
PE Requirement Exceptions
If you're an undergraduate student at mini´«Ã½ and still need 1–2 activity units to meet the PE requirement (University Policy S14-11 [pdf]), you may request:
- Substitution:
Request to substitute a PE activity course not currently listed as PE. - Exemption:
Apply for a 1 to 2 unit exempt due to documented extenuating circumstances that prevent you from completing the requirement. - Challenge:
Demonstrate your skills and knowledge to fulfill 1 or 2 units.
To challenge a PE course, please consult at least one term prior to graduation with the Physical Activity Program Coordinator, .
What to Include in Your Petition
- Personal Statement – Explain why you're requesting an exception
- Supporting Documents – Syllabus, course descriptions (in English), medical forms, University’s Healthcare Provider Verification Form, etc.
- Transcripts – From the school where you took the course(s), unofficial copies are ok.

Missing info = automatic denial.
Important Notes
- Online PE classes are available at mini´«Ã½ and community colleges. Needing to avoid in-person classes is not a valid reason for a waiver.
- You can meet the PE requirement by:
- Two different
- One
- Intercollegiate Athletics (1 unit per sport)
- KIN 1 (Adapted Physical Activity)
- with PE waiver (check with Articulation Office at articulation@sjsu.edu)
- Major-specific waivers (check )
